June 24, 2008 Higashi Kurume wheelchair storage shelves built

Mr. Hall was my 8th grade science teacher; a tough teacher, but one who inspired you to work hard. He taught us about the levels of sky above us and the classifications of rocks under our feet. His tests were difficult, but his hands-on experiments made mastery of the material both possible and memorable.

A few years have passed since then, but we have not lost touch. This summer Mr. Hall visited Japan to do construction work for SEND.  We contacted him about the possibility of help to build shelving for our Higashi Kurume wheelchair storage area.  He listened carefully to what we wanted, measured the storage facility, thought awhile, and then drew up plans for shelving which were sturdier, safer, and more economical than we had planned. He then enlisted the help of a college student, teaching him as they built together.  All this he did gratis.

We now have space for about 85 wheelchairs, space we will use as we prepare 100 wheelchairs for the China earthquake victims.  The rocks beneath them shook; we hope these chairs will help them look to the sky with hope.
